Location: Lapland Vuollerin (Sweden)
Main activities and expected outcomes
Vuollerim is Sweden’s northernmost dairy and charcuterie centre, founded as part of a farm and food cooperative under a broader smart village strategy. The cooperative transforms milk from hardy mountain cows into award-winning cheeses, while reinvesting all profits locally. It also contributes to a vibrant ecosystem of eight community-owned enterprises, including a hotel, school, artisan food house, and tourism company.
Rural problem addressed
Vuollerim tackles the urgent issue of depopulation in a remote Arctic Circle village, where the population has fallen from 3,000 to 700 over the past three decades. The initiative also addresses the difficulty of sustaining livelihoods in isolated regions with long distances to markets and limited specialised skills.
