Regenerative viticulture in Ribera del Duero – A collaborative approach

Location: Aranda de Duero (Ribera del Duero, Spain)

Main activities and expected outcomes

Within the Rewilding Ribera project, four pioneering wineries in the Ribera del Duero—Martín Berdugo, ARTIO, Territorio Luthier, and Bosque de Matasnos—are collaborating to shift from ecological to regenerative viticulture. Supported by NBSCLIMATE, they are adopting best regenerative practices and developing new revenue streams to strengthen biodiversity, climate resilience, and territorial cohesion.

Rural problem addressed

In the Ribera del Duero bioregion, some of the key challenges that the project will help address include:
• Climate impacts on the local population and economy, resulting from droughts, water scarcity, floods and torrential rains, extreme temperatures, pests, and other climate-related risks.
• Abandonment and decline of rural areas, including the exodus of young people, business closures, and the lack of basic public services and infrastructure (transport, healthcare, education, IT).

Best practices

Two best practices stand out:

  • the fine balance between protecting and restoring nature and economic viability
  • the spirit of collaboration and shared destiny of the four pioneering wineries.
