Innovative Materials from Peatland

Location: Brandenburg (Germany) & Continental

Main activities and expected outcomes

This initiative develops products and services from peatland management through the technological, social and
organizational innovation for the valorization of bog hay.

Rural problem addressed

Among the main rural problems addressed by this Association are: the deterioration of economic profitability from grassland in the recent years, structural poverty in rural and remote areas and climate change mitigation and adaptation.

Best practices

What makes this case so special are its innovative community-led plans to include cooperation with the Federal Office for Materials Research while contributing to many overarching societal goals, i.e. climate protection through the rewetting of grassland on moorland, binding carbondioxide in the building products and creating a positive socio- economic development in remote rural areas.
